Restoration Projects. SMOF – WINCHESTER RECEIVER AND TRIGGER GUARD FOR A BRITISH PATTERN 14 RIFLE MADE BY WINCHESTER SERIAL W The British Army, charged with maintaining order in a world wide empire, adopted a bolt action rifle firing a rimmed cartridge in After their experience of being wounded and killed by the 7 mm Mauser rifles during the Boer War, .
Rather their positions were isolated and bombarded from distance. Where, however, the British assaulted Volunteer positions dominating the routes into the city, fighting was much more bloody. There they were drawn into street fighting, with its invisible snipers and sudden close range cross-fires, which negated their superiority in men and firepower. At Mount Street, on the approach to the city centre from the port at Kingstown now Dun Laoghaire , a Volunteer outpost manned by only 17 men , armed with rifles and hand guns, faced the frontal assault of a battalion of British troops.
As it was they occupied the stately Clanwilliam House — commanding the crossing over the Grand Canal — and two houses on Northumberland road, an upper class, leafy, red-bricked neighbourhood. On April 26, they were faced by a British regiment, the Sherwood Foresters, just off the boat from a training depot in England, and so inexperienced that they had to be shown on the pier at Kingstown how to fire and reload their weapons .
On top of that, they had left behind their grenades and their Lewis machine guns had been lost in the crossing .

Mexican Golden Age films often depicted the protagonists and antagonists as gun-slinging cowboys and charros , an example of a cultural attachment to guns that was shared in both sides of the border. It was through the means of armed combat that Mexico achieved its independence from Spain. From then on, the course of history was marked by several armed conflicts, including the American —48 and French —67 conflicts, as well as indigenous struggles due to the several forms of government that ruled over Mexican territory, culminating with the Mexican Revolution —20 and the Cristero War — During the first half of the 20th century, a prevalent culture of guns was well present in Mexico.
While regulation and conditions for the lawful ownership and possession of firearms existed, guns remained a household item, to the point that foreigners would travel to Mexico to engage in hunting and target shooting activities, including the popular silhouette shooting game that originated in Mexico. By the s , the government modified Article 10 of the Constitution and enacted the Federal Law of Firearms and Explosives, limiting gun ownership to small-caliber handguns, heavily restricting the right to carry outside the homeplace and ending a cultural attachment to firearms by shutting down gun stores , outlawing the private sale of firearms , closing down public shooting facilities.
In addition, the government has conducted gun-exchange programs from time to time, where citizens are encouraged to exchange any firearm registered, unregistered, legal or illegal for either a cash incentive or groceries , without fear of civil or criminal prosecution. Historical legislation[ edit ] Prior to the Independence of Mexico , the first official record of a restriction on the possession of firearms occurred in as the Mexican War of Independence was taking place.

It is, in fact, a Polish Army service rifle issued as stop gap measure during the Interwar Period. The nation was formed from territories scattered amongst the Soviet Union, German, and Hapsburg Empires and had immediate trouble with its neighbors. Most importantly though, the Polish-Soviet war ran from until and exhausted both combatants. The peace treaty at Riga divided Ukraine and Belarus between the two nations. This left Poles in Soviet territory and many people resentful of Polish rule.
Needless to say, Poland was very concerned with its own military strength.

It would have been carried by the local watch officers prior to the establishment of Peel’s police force in Thereafter the bonnet was replaced by a royal crown.
There are a number of methods by which a rifle can be dated, or at least bracketed between certain years of manufacture. For the latter, dates of introduction of military arms can be located within the Government “List of Changes” LoCs as can dates of obsolescence and of modification or upgrade to later marks. You may not necessarily find specific date information within the text of particular pages, but often the images of advertisements or catalogue entries contain some dating ‘give-away’, such as the year in which a particular rifle achieved a notable competition score by someone, but which data is in graphic format and therefore not “searchable” by a text search engine.
Do not briefly glance over a page and assume that the information you require is not there. It may not be immediately obvious, but careful observation may provide you with the information for which you are looking. Such research is a major part of the joy of owning, collecting and shooting classic or historic rifles.
The Schnellfeuer, or Model , was Mauser’s answer to the Spanish production of selective fire C96 lookalikes. Just over , of these pistols were made by Mauser in the s, mostly going to China (although some did see use in other countries, and also with the SS).
Early history[ edit ] Inspired by the French Gendarmerie , the corps was created by King Victor Emmanuel I of Savoy with the aim of providing the Kingdom of Sardinia with a police corps. Previously, police duties were managed by the Dragoni di Sardegna Corps, created in and composed of volunteers. After French soldiers had occupied Turin at the end of the 18th century and later abandoned it to the Kingdom of Piedmont , the Royal Carabinieri Corps was instituted under the Royal Patents of 13 July The divisions were further divided into companies and subdivided into lieutenancies, which commanded and coordinated the local police stations and were distributed throughout the national territory in direct contact with the public.
In , the Corazzieri mounted division was formed — initially as an escort of honour for the sovereign, and since for the President of the Republic. The defenders had sufficient time to prepare strong fortifications there, and in the Carso theatre to the east, and the Italian regiments, under overall command of General Cadorna , found themselves repeatedly repulsed in harsh fighting.
The role of the Carabinieri was to act as barrier troops , setting up machine gun posts to control the rear of the attacking regiments and prevent desertion. During World War II they fought in their function as military police against the Allied forces, and against Yugoslav partisans as part of the Italian occupation force in Yugoslavia. After Mussolini’s fall on 25 July , he was arrested by the Carabinieri as he left the king’s private residence in Rome and subsequently imprisoned on Campo Imperatore by Carabinieri forces.
After the armistice between Italy and the Allies on 3 September and the country’s split into the fascist Italian Social Republic in the north and the Kingdom of Italy in the south, the Carabinieri split into two groups. In southern Italy the Carabinieri Command for Liberated Italy was founded in Bari, mobilizing new units for the Italian war of liberation. In northern Italy the fascist regime organized the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana composed of Carabinieri, former colonial policemen, Guardia di Finanza and customs police , to employ it as a military police and rapid-deployment anti-guerilla force.
GNR was later joined but not taken over by the Black Brigades which should have represented a new militant incarnation of the Fascist party.

The sniper was a key element in the doctrine and actions taken by the Red Army on a platoon or company basis.

Note that although the year codes start with A, that by itself is not evidence that these codes were actually in use by Actual observed marks on actual observed guns suggests that the year code system was not in universal use that early. So, just when did the Eibar proof house switch from the older stamps to the newer ones? It looks like the big year was Guns proofed in might have either the older or newer stamps.
Of course dating the older stamps can be an exercise, as they don’t have a date code. Other information such as the serial number of the gun must be used to estimate the manufacture date, which puts limits on the proofing date. Obviously, errors are possible. But so far, is my best guess for the transition date.
From the collection of the Deutsches Historisches Museum, a reader named James found an example of an Obrez pistol made on a Mauser K98 rifle action. This apparently was made by Czech partisans during World War II, using the grip from an MG42 machine gun. Obrez made by Czech partisans with a Mauser rifle and MG42 grip (photo from DHM).
